There is a lot of stigma around getting up at 5am or earlier, I think because of the way some people present it. Sometimes it can seem a little cult like, with following that this life strategy can get, but that is really not the case.
I had been getting up around 5 – 6am for a few years already, mostly due to my husband’s work schedule, but from the time I woke, to around 8am, absolutely nothing got done! I would just sip my coffee, and diddle around on social media, and waste all that time.
At the time I didn’t see anything wrong with that, « Just a couple hours for myself, before the work day starts » I would say. Then I started to realize I was also saying the same thing after, the work day « Just a couple hours of TV to relax after my work day »
Well a couple hours on social media in the morning, and a couple hours binge watching Netflix in the evening, my day did not turn into much. So yes I was « taking time for me » but in doing this, I was neglecting the things I wanted to do for me. My goals, the things I wanted to do with my life, where pushed to the back burner to leave space for « me time ». Doesn’t make much sense does it? And why exactly do I need 6 hours of « me time » everyday??, I was beginning to sound a little egocentric right?
So what would happen if I took 4 or 5 of those hours, and started dedicating them to my goals? Would I start to feel like I didn’t have enough « me time »? Quite to the contrary actually! I started to feel amazing, like the sky was the limit. At the end of the day I didn’t regret not checking Facebook, I revelled in the fact that instead I had made progress towards my goals!
Instead of spending 3 mundane hours in the morning, doing – well – nothing, now I workout, eat breakfast, do my barn chores, train my horses, and get ready for my day all before 8am! This schedule has become such a huge part of my routine, if I don’t do it, I feel crappy for most of the day!
So I can be super productive, make progress towards my goals, prep for my next day in the evening and still end up with at least 2 hours in the evening to binge watch The Big Bang Theory! Seems like a pretty awesome, balanced life to me! 😜
